"Girl" by Beck

Ok, I know this song is old news, but I was recently baffled because the lyrics are NOTHING like what I thought they were. I always thought "Girl" by Beck was an amazing summer anthem with the words "Hey, my sun-eyed girl" repeated in the chorus. My dad and sister thought it was "Southern girl" and we all thought it was a happy, beachy song.

We were wrong. Here are the actual lyrics:

I saw her, yea I saw her
With her black tongue tied round the roses

A fist pounding on a vending machine
Toy diamond ring stuck on her finger
With a noose she can hang from the sun
And put it out with her dark sunglasses
Walking crooked down the beach
She spits on the sand
Where their bones are bleaching

And I know I'm gonna steal her life
She doesn't even know what's wrong
And I know I'm gonna make her die
Take her where her soul belongs
And I know I'm gonna steal her life
Nothing that I wouldn't try

Hey, my cyanide girl
Hey, my cyanide girl
My my cyanide girl
Hey, my cyanide girl

I saw her, yea I saw her
With her hands tied back
Rags a' burnin'
Calling out from a landfilled life
Scrawlin' her name upon the ceiling
Throw a coin in a fountain of dust
White noise, her ears are ringing
Got a ticket for my midnight hanging
Throw a bullet from a freight train leaving

And I know I'm gonna steal her life
She doesn't even know what's wrong
And I know I'm gonna make her die
Take her where her soul belongs
And I know I'm gonna steal her life
Nothing that I wouldn't try

Hey, my cyanide girl
Hey, my cyanide girl
My my cyanide girl

The coolest part about this song is not that it's super creepy when we all thought it was happy, but it's purposely deceiving. The music video is a hint at the fact that things are not always how they seem, but again it's not direct. You don't see any psychopaths hanging in the shadows plotting their murders, you just see signs and scenes that completely change meanings when you take a closer look.

It's brilliant. Thanks, Beck, for making me feel like Nancy Drew for the day.

Aw, ya baked!

I have been sick for the past week or so, and today I thought I'd take it easy in hopes that I will be well before Friday (my birthday celebration!). So when it came to feeding myself, I really did not want to go anywhere or spend any money.

I found extra firm tofu (which I bought for the cleanse & subsequently did not eat) and decided I'd try cooking it. After googling things like "How to make tofu taste good" and realizing I didn't have enough ingredients for anything, I decided on this recipe from AllRecipes.com.

Of the ingredient list, I was missing: ginger, curry powder, chile paste, tomatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms, fresh basil and bok choy.

I improvised.

I used hot pepper jelly (why this was in my parents' fridge, I have no idea), ground cumin, red pepper flakes, minced garlic, spinach, frozen veggies-in-a-bag (randomly found in the freezer) and a ridiculous amount of powdered basil (I thought it had a salt shaker-like top, but no).

It actually turned out pretty well! Considering I am by no means a cook, I was beyond excited. I poured that bad boy over rice-in-a-bag and ate it up.

What a great song. This video tells a big story with a really cute kid. Deep stuff.

Sonic Fail

Told ya. Zero self control. But cheddar peppers are SO delicious & diet cherry limeade doesn't count. I also couldn't stop myself from buying three pairs of new shoes. More on that later.

Self Cleansing

I finally finished the process of moving all of my stuff from my apartment (on the fourth floor) to my parents' house in Ocala. Proof:

So I've decided to do something! Not clean my room, if that's what you were thinking, in fact here's a little video I live by:

Yea. Chili face noodle punch. That's how much I dislike cleaning.

Anyway, I've decided I should be more healthy in my eating habits so I started a 2-day cleanse.. two days ago. Needless to say, I cheated (and for a spamburger no less). I have no will power--and you have no idea how delicious spamburgers are, BUT to make up for it I'm continuing it on to day 3. It's from WomensHealthMag.com and here's the link to it. Lots of fruit smoothies, green tea and protein. I'm still working on the smoothie for today, so no cheating so far.

Besides that I'm going to try to keep track of all my workouts. I feel strongly that I should be working out at least four times a week. Plus I'm running a half marathon (Disney Wine & Dine) in September, which I'm doing by myself and it's sold out. So, let me know if you feel like wining & dining & not so much running with me after the event.

Also, I found a recipe for sunflower seed cheese (both things that I love minus the lactose) so I will be attempting that and documenting it soon. Get excited.

Pumped Up Kicks

This is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in a long time. I love, love, love it. (Their dance moves may have a little something to do with it.)

Fourth of July Crafting

After disliking all the USA-tastic bathing suits I saw at Walmart & Target, I decided I'd declare my own independence by making my own. I got tips from this video & winged a lot of it. Here goes:
(fabric was 80% nylon & 20% spandex)

Happy Fourth of July!

**During the making of this bikini I watched: Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, SLC Punk, Benny & Joon
I listened to: TLC, Lissie & Minus The Bear (not simultaneously)
